Ya’ll know that phase “work smarter and not harder” right? Well, ever since I became a Mom that has been my mantra. I remember when I was teaching, parents would be so flustered about how to teach their children. Understandably so. Schools have changed dramatically from even the time I started teaching until my last year before I relocated. Don’t even get me started about how it was when I was growing up. I was part of that last group that still got paddled at school. Did I just show my age?!?!? LOL! All I’m saying is you don’t have to have a bunch of PhDs to teach children basic skills. Children are going to learn. You determine what it will be. And please! Please! Please! Do not wait until they get to school. I will elaborate more at another time. For now I want to give you an easy way to knock out several skills at once using an everyday routine. Cooking! Yes, cooking! Cooking with your children is so important! Children learn how to follow directions, learn order (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), measuring, and even some science (what happens when I mix this with this?). On a measuring cup, if you have littles (2 or 3yr olds), have them search for the numbers Voila! number recognition. If they’re older, have them go over what is 1/4, 1/2, tsp, tbsp, etc. I have my daughter , who is 6, tell me the abbreviations (What does tsp stand for?). Cooking also teaches patience and cooperation, starting something and working towards its completion. All of those skills are learned in one activity that we do everyday! See! Easy as pie…or bread! LOL!

My kids and I made peanut butter banana bread this morning during our math lesson.
