January 20, 2021. Historic! A movement! Chucks and pearls! What we saw on Jan. 20th was beyond my comprehension. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., it was a moment to reflect on what our founders’ dreamed of. A world that equally acknowledged women as capable of leadership. And just like now how we have to fight to get the things that we want, imagine 50 years post emancipation proclamation where slaves were given absolutely nothing but were expected to survive. Jim Crow was creeping in. Lynchings were still happening. But yet Howard University appeared. All other educational institutions appeared. Masonic organizations and the like appeared. Going on a tangent, knowing this and reflecting on it gives me goose bumps. I mean I can’t even imagine your life literally on the line but yet by any means necessary! My goodness! Anywho. Black people were trying to navigate as “Americans” in this strange land. Now true enough it is evident in some ways that we are still trying to navigate due to forced assimilation, but I finally feel that those chains are being broken.
I’m just so glad to finally see US come together (of course there’s going to always be those that disagree). It’s a beautiful thing when we stop trying to fit each other in a box OR have some sort of blackness litmus test. It’s simple beautiful! I hope and pray this feeling never ends and we continue hand in hand to fight for equal rights so that more young girls of color can continue to break that glass ceiling.
It’s a wonderful day, folks! It’s a wonderful day!!!
