A Song for Mama

MAMA! Big Mama! Ima tell my mama! Yo mama! Most of us can relate to those phrases! For me, those are precious memories spent in my great grandmother’s (we called her Memama) backyard! Growing up in a community where everyone looked like you (35% were your cousins), those phrases were said frequently. Mother’s Day is coming up and I wanted to dedicate this blog at all of my Village Mamas out there! Do ya’ll remember that song that Boyz II Men did? I don’t think there’s a song out there that could sum up how we feel about our mamas! As women we are the glue that binds are families together, and if you grew up in a family like mine, those Big Mamas, Memamas were the matriarch of the family. From that came wisdom, a foundation, stability. You knew who you were and who you weren’t. You remember those old sayings, colloquials, quotes (not to mention scriptures). “Keep taking that pitcher to the well..” You knew what she was going to do before she did. That generation was very predictable, very crafty with minimal “education”. Sadly, that generation is all but gone, but I still see women do what we do best. We hold it all together! We have to! It’s how we were created and because of our particular culture and history, it’s for survival!

You all have no idea how elated I am to be launching my blog in time for Mother’s Day! This is for you! The village of mamas! This Mother’s Day I want you to relax. Yes! Relax! Take your mind off of “this and that”. You know what I mean! Take a few minutes and breathe. There’s a lot going on right now. A lot of uncertainties. So take the time to count your blessings. If you haven’t had the chance to grab a new book or listen to a podcast, I encourage you to do so. Personally, I listen to different podcasts that I’m not that knowledgeable in. I’m listening to one now that I really enjoy. It’s on being financially literate ( l highly recommend Jamila Souffrant Journey to Launch). Why? Because the more you expand, the more you understand how the world works outside of our motherhood bubble. Comment below your recommended reads or podcasts.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m giving you two fun sheets to do with your children. One is a fun coloring sheet and the other is a fun interview. Interviews are a fun, non stressful way to help children develop language. When doing this interview please encourage your child to speak in complete sentences. You can help to model this by speaking first and then encouraging your child to repeat what you said.

After you are done with the interview and recorded their answers, please email me their answers. Please tell me their first name or you can give me initials, which ever you are comfortable with, and their age. I want to post their answers! It will stay up on my page so don’t worry if it’s after Mother’s Day. Thank you!

When I was teaching PreK, I would often do the same crafts/activities with my students as I did Alice (Alexander wasn’t born yet). This Mother’s Day craft I did a few years ago. I gave one to all 4 (2 grandmas and 2 great grandmas).

If you want to do this craft, which is super easy, go to https://christinamariablog.com/kids-craft-mothers-day-mason-jar-vase/

I'm a former early childhood classroom teacher now stay at home mom. I taught for 14 years and enjoyed every minute of it! A career and location change has led me to this path of wanting to help others make sure their children are off to a great start in their development!
